Buckeyes hold steady in latest College Football Playoff rankings
COLUMBUS — Ohio State finally got back to taking care of business in blowout fashion over the weekend.
The latest Buckeyes, win a six-score victory over Indiana, gave the College Football Playoff committee no reason to dock them or move any other program ahead of them.
That’s why they, unsurprisingly, remained No. 2 in the third batch of CFP rankings on Tuesday night, trailing only Georgia, which continues its march through an easy SEC East slate.
Ohio State is one of just three Big Ten teams to show up in the third rankings. Rival Michigan remained No. 3, and the Wolverines will show up for a massive Big Ten East showdown against Ohio State on Nov. 26.
Penn State moved up yet again, this time to No. 11. Illinois fell out of the rankings after losing to Purdue over the weekend, the second straight loss for the Illini.

Ohio State’s season-opening opponent, Notre Dame, just keeps moving on up the standings, as well. After losing to the Buckeyes — and then suffering embarrassing losses to Marshall and Stanford, the Fighting Irish have beaten North Carolina, Syracuse and former top-four team Clemson. Notre Dame checked in this week at No. 18 after beating Navy.
This released poll comes after the Buckeyes remained in the top three of the AP Top 25 following another win over Indiana on Saturday. And after another notch in the win column, that’s exactly where Ohio State will stay in both the AP Poll and the new College Football Playoff rankings.
The Buckeyes received just one first-place vote in the AP Poll on Sunday, and now the rankings that will ultimately matter at the end of the season are out. They’re near the top of the CFP rankings as the process continues.
