The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re continuing with our ninth and final positional week with the Buckeyes cornerbacks unit.

COLUMBUS — Ohio State knows who will lead the way for its cornerbacks this fall.

Junior cornerback Denzel Burke enters his third season as a starter with sky-high expectations. Following an impressive freshman season, he slipped up last year.

But he changed his approach this offseason, and it has certainly paid off. The third-year cornerback is the leader of the Buckeyes cornerback room. And that unit will go as far as Burke takes them; he’s the harbinger.

“I kind of came to the conclusion that I gotta start moving different on and off the field if I really want to do the things I know I can do,” Burke said this spring. “And let other people see that, so it’s just like a chain effect. Everybody starts doing what they need to do to get better.”

Burke’s play is contagious. The Buckeyes play better when Burke is playing well. That can have a cascading effect in the secondary this fall.

With Burke leading the way, the cornerbacks are due to take a big step forward this season. Don’t be surprised if its one of the better units on the field for Ohio State come September.
