COLUMBUS — Ohio State opened spring practice Tuesday with the first of 15 practice sessions over the next six weeks.

Among the new faces on the field was a former NFL cornerback who has prior experience under Buckeyes defense coordinator Jim Knowles.

Ohio State has added former NFL cornerback and now secondary coach Michael Hunter to its staff. Hunter announced the news on his social media profile, and he’ll be a graduate assistant. The news was first reported by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.

Hunter played four years at Indiana from 2011 to 2014 before transferring and finishing his career with a season at Oklahoma State in 2015. After four seasons in the NFL with six different teams, Hunter entered the coaching sphere.

He was hired by Jim Knowles and Oklahoma State in 2021, where he worked under Knowles for one year and stayed a year later as well. Hunter worked as an assistant secondary coach during those two seasons. Last year, he was on former Buckeyes offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s first staff at Tulsa as the cornerbacks coach; Hunter played for Wilson at Indiana.

Now he’s leaving Wilson’s staff to rejoin Knowles and the Buckeyes, where he’ll work with a loaded group of Ohio State cornerbacks. The Buckeyes return all three starting cornerbacks from a season ago (Denzel Burke, Jordan Hancock and Davison Igbinosun) and key depth pieces in Jermaine Mathews and Calvin Simpson-Hunt. That’s not even mentioning the loaded 2024 recruiting haul that Tim Walton landed.

The safety position is also full of stars. Ohio State has Alabama transfer and second-team All-American safety Caleb Downs to line up beside Lathan Ransom — and the depth is full for Matt Guerrieri’s unit as well.

Ohio State still thought it could use some help with coaching this incredible secondary. Insert Michael Hunter, who will work with that unit. He’s joining the staff just in time for spring football to kick off.
