Ryan Day on Michigan planting flag after game: "Our guys weren't going to let that happen"
COLUMBUS — Ohio State coach Ryan Day was asked postgame about the mid-field fight that unfolded after the Buckeyes 13-10 loss to Michigan.
Michigan players brought a flag to midfield and tried to stick it in the turf after the upset win, like they did in 2022. But the Buckeyes players ripped that flag away, and a brawl ensued. Multiple staff members, players and media members were caught up in it — and some were pepper-sprayed.
Here’s what Day said about it:
“Yeah I don’t know all the details of it,” Day said in his postgame press conference. “But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren’t going to let that happen. I’ll find out exactly what happened but this is our field and certainly we’re embarrassed at the face we lost the game but there’s some prideful guys on our team that weren’t just going to let that happen.”
Specifically in this skirmish, Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer could be seen ripping down the Michigan flag and stepping on it in an attempt to make sure it couldn’t be planted. Sawyer returned to Ohio State for his senior season, along with countless other Buckeyes who passed up the 2024 NFL Draft, to beat Michigan.

They now leave Columbus 0-4 against the Wolverines. Ryan Day is 1-4.
Day doesn’t know if any members of his program were hurt in the fight.
“I don’t know if I know all that, right now,” Day said about any injuries for his players. “There was a couple things kind of crazy that went on down there but I think everybody is OK.
… Well I just talked to the team after the game and again, without knowing all the details, there’s some prideful guys on our team that aren’t just going to sit back and watch that happen,” Day said.
