Buckeyes waiting on two game-time decisions on offense
COLUMBUS — For the second straight week, Ohio State is waiting on a final call for two of its top four receivers.
Both Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Julian Fleming are game-time decisions for the 7 p.m. kickoff at Ohio Stadium against Toledo on Saturday night; Smith-Njigba was injured early in the season-opening win over Notre Dame, while Fleming dressed for the opener but didn’t play before sitting out last week’s game.
Kamryn Babb is out for the primetime kick, leaving the Ohio State wide receiver depth in question heading into Week Three, especially if the pair of third-year playmakers can’t go.
Ryan Day hinted that both Smith-Njigba and Fleming were progressing nicely this week and could end up in the lineup as the Buckeyes close out nonconference play Saturday night.
“He’s further along than he was at this time last week,” Day said Tuesday during his weekly press conference about Smith-Njigba. “We’re going to expect him to play this weekend. We’ll see how this week goes. We’re going to only put him ion the game if he’s 100-percent ready to roll.”
Ohio State has been able to move to 2-0 early this season despite missing Fleming and Smith-Njigba. But the Buckeyes will certainly be better with both in the lineup, and they’ll find out if both are healthy shortly before kickoff.
Additionally, Ohio State will be without backup cornerback Jordan Hancock and reserve linebacker Teradja Mitchell, among others, for the game against Toledo for the second straight week, as well.
