Buckeyes freshman quarterback Julian Sayin sheds black stripe
COLUMBUS — The buzz surrounding Ohio State freshman quarterback Julian Sayin just keeps getting louder.
It reached a new high Monday when the Buckeyes team social media account announced the latest development in a stellar spring for the first-year quarterback: he lost his black stripe after the Buckeyes 12th practice of the spring.
He joins former five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith as the only two Buckeyes freshmen to lose their black stripes so far this spring.
For Sayin, this is a long time coming since he began to flash at the beginning of spring practice.
Sayin transferred to Ohio State from Alabama after signing with Crimson Tide’s 2024 recruiting class in December. Once Nick Saban retired as Alabama’s head coach, Sayin entered the transfer portal and landed with the Buckeyes.
Now he’s flashing brilliance through just a few weeks of spring practice, as some Lettermen Row sources have indicated that he has been impressive throughout spring ball.
Sayin and fellow freshman quarterback Air Noland have been working through their first spring with the Buckeyes. Both were top-five quarterbacks in their recruiting class according to the On3 Consensus Rankings, and Sayin has caught the eye of many already this early in his career. The former five-star prospect really wowed during Student Appreciation Day last week.

Multiple Lettermen Row sources have been impressed with Sayin’s approach and on-field showing so far through the first few practices of his college career. What do we make of that? It just depends on how well the top of the depth chart is performing.
Kansas State transfer Will Howard and third-year Buckeyes quarterback Devin Brown are still at the top of the battle to become the next starter for the Buckeyes, but Sayin is making a push to become the backup by the beginning of the season.
He’s been so impressive that Ohio State decided he has spent enough time with a black stripe still on his helmet. That was removed Monday.
The hype surrounding the young, talented quarterback keeps growing louder.
