Speedy freshman wide receiver Kaleb Brown sheds black stripe for Buckeyes
COLUMBUS — Kaleb Brown is just a couple of months into his Ohio State career.
He is already impressing in a wide receiver room full of former five-star prospects and talented future pros.
Brown became the latest true freshman to lose his black stripe, a mark signaling that he is officially a member of the football program for the Buckeyes. He joins cornerback Jyaire Brown and C.J. Hicks as the freshmen who have shed their stripe during camp.
Safety Kye Stokes and defensive lineman Caden Curry both lost theirs in the spring.
For Kaleb Brown, he may have already found his path to playing time during his first season at Ohio State. He has been working as a punt-return specialist, a spot he could showcase his elite speed and skillset.
“He’s just getting going here,” Day said of Brown after the first week of training camp. “He’s somebody that has that skillset. So we’re going to try to bring him along there. We’ve had a few guys, probably had three or four guys back there. Jaxon [Smith-Njigba] being one of them and Cam Martinez. Emeka [Egbuka] is back there. And then Kaleb [Brown] is is learning.”
With his black stripe removed, Kaleb Brown is just beginning to start making an impact for the Buckeyes. And he is another wide receiver who is emerging for the Ohio State offense.

Kaleb Brown joins CB Jyaire Brown, LB C.J. Hicks, who lost black stripes last week
Ohio State freshman cornerback Jyaire Brown is in the early days of his first training camp with the Buckeyes.
But it is clear that he is already making a push for a role. Brown became the first freshman to lose his black stripe during the month of training camp, shedding the stripe that signifies an official place with the Buckeyes, last Tuesday.
C.J. Hicks became the second Buckeyes freshman last week to lose his black stripe, joining cornerback Jyaire Brown, when he shed his stripe over the weekend. Hicks is pushing to be a part of the Buckeyes linebacker rotation. With his elite size and speed, he can make it happen. The opportunities will be there against some nonconference opponents to help him prove he belongs on the field this fall.
