Buckeyes safety Kye Stokes enters transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Kye Stokes surprised everyone with an incredible first spring at Ohio State.
But two seasons later, Stokes is on his way out of the Buckeyes program. Stokes entered the transfer portal early Monday morning after two years in a reserve role as an Ohio State safety. He’ll have three years of eligibility at his next stop.
Stokes is the second Buckeyes safety to announce his intention to enter the transfer portal since the regular season ended last weekend. Fourth-year safety Cameron Martinez previously announced his intent to leave the program Thursday.
Ohio State landed a commitment from Stokes in May 2021 when he was a little-known three-star prospect from Seffner, Florida. The Armwood High School standout was the No. 287 player in the country, No. 27 safety and No. 33 player in the state of Florida in the class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
Stokes broke out during his first spring on campus — in 2022 — at Ohio State, just a couple of months into his Buckeyes career. He capped off an impressive six weeks of spring camp with a breakout spring game, totaling nine tackles and two pass breakups in the 2022 spring game. He then spent his freshman season developing under Perry Eliano.
“Obviously you saw Kye flash in the spring, but you know, there’s more to it than just the spring,” Eliano told Lettermen Row at Peach Bowl media day last December. “There’s summer workouts, there’s the fall camp, there’s a lot that goes into it. I’ve seen Kye grow from January to now. He’s going to be a really good football player.”
Stokes did develop again in Year Two, but he didn’t earn a role in his second season on campus at Ohio State. Now he’s going to try earning one at his next stop.
After a pair of developmental seasons with the Buckeyes, Kye Stokes is going to find a new fit with hopes of finding a role on the field. It just won’t be with Ohio State.
