LETTERMEN LOUNGE MESSAGE BOARD GAME THREAD

FOURTH QUARTER

FINAL: Ohio State wins 41-7.

7:35, 4Q — Brandon Inniss catches the first pass of his career and takes it to the end zone for a 58-yard score. His first catch is also his first touchdown. It’s 41-7.

14:30, 4Q — The shutout has ended. Purdue finds the end zone after the short field caused by McCord’s fumble. It’s 34-7, Ohio State leads.

THIRD QUARTER

END OF 3: Ohio State leads 34-0 but Purdue has a 4th down inside the Buckeyes red zone after a strip sack of Kyle McCord.

2:30, 3Q — Marvin Harrison Jr. records his third drop of the day, a very rare sighting for the superstar receiver. Ohio State punts.

4:36, 3Q — Another Ohio State touchdown. After Kyle McCord connected with Carnell Tate on a beautiful throw down the field for a gain of 55, he finds Cade Stover for a 14-yard touchdown. It’s 34-0.

8:00, 3Q — Purdue kicks another cowardly field goal, and this one is also wide. That poor kicker is 0-3 on the day. The Ohio State shutout is preserved — somehow.

10:13, 3Q — Freshman Jermaine Mathews Jr. is in the game at cornerback for Denzel Burke, who is in the medical tent. Burke headed to the locker room shortly after.

12:24, 3Q — Dallan Hayden scores a 1-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the second half. Drive stats: 6 plays, 67 yards, 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Ohio State did not have a third down on that drive.

SECOND QUARTER

HALFTIME — Ohio State leads 20-0. The Buckeyes have out-gained Purdue 269-120. They’re 6-7 on third down.

:02, 2Q — DOINK! Purdue’s kicker hits the left upright to end a miserable half of football for the Boilermakers. It is raining hard and the stands are beginning to clear.

:06, 2Q — The Purdue offensive line is terrible. Give the Ohio State defensive line for teeing off and getting to the quarterback, but this is just a poor offensive line.

1:00, 2Q — That Purdue drive began with four backup defensive linemen on the field for Ohio State. And it’s the best drive the Boilermakers have had all day. Rotate in the second half.

3:22, 2Q — Josh Simmons has been called for holding. Progress isn’t linear, folks. And it blows up an Ohio State drive. Punt.

3:38, 2Q — Purdue actually gained a first down on that drive — and then lost seven yards on the next set of downs. Tyleik Williams had a batted pass and Jack Sawyer collected a sack. Purdue is having a bad time.

6:02, 2Q — Touchdown on the next play. Cade Stover makes an insane catch on a questionable Kyle McCord throw. Ohio State is winning 20-0. The scoreboard doesn’t show how bad this blowout is.

6:15, 2Q — McCord to Harrison again. Ohio State touchdown — but he dropped it. Weird.

11:29, 2Q — Another Purdue three and out. Ballard back to return and lets it land. Buckeyes fourth drive will begin on their own 27.

13:33, 2Q — Devin Brown fumbles into the end zone for a touchback one play after nearly throwing an interception. Just not a good two-play sequence for him.

FIRST QUARTER

0:45, 1Q — QB SNEAK ALERT.

2:22, 1Q, — Chip Trayanum took a brutal hit and tried to get off the field but fell before he got there. His day is very likely done, and Dallan Hayden is in the ballgame.

2:48, 1Q — Another Purdue three and out. Ballard back to return and lets it land. Buckeyes third drive will begin on their own 28.

5:06, 1Q — Devin Brown enters the game at QB and runs QB power for a first down on 3rd and 1. He also scored a rushing touchdown. It’s 13-0.

7:00, 1Q — Ohio State is on the move after a Purdue punt, which was fielded by Jayden Ballard.

8:58, 1Q — The cart is out for Purdue offensive lineman Luke Griffin. He’s very hurt. And the Purdue offensive line becomes even more banged up than it already was entering the game.

9:11, 1Q — Marvin Harrison Jr. touchdown because McCord threw a dot and Purdue is insistent it can single-cover Marvin Harrison Jr. But Jayden Fielding missed the extra point.

9:17, 1Q — Ryan Day calls the Buckeyes’ first timeout before 3rd and 6 from the Purdue 14.

11:43, 1Q — After a Julian Fleming drop and an incompletion, Kyle McCord finds Marvin Harrison Jr. We’re shocked. First down, Ohio State.

11:59, 1Q — Wide left on the field goal from Purdue, and Ohio State gets a big-time early stop.

13:00, 1Q — Purdue is lighting Ohio State up with misdirection, moving the ball with ease on the opening drive. Good script for Graham Harrell and the Boilermakers.

Pregame — Ohio State won the toss and deferred to the second half.

Pregame — Standard captains for Ohio State. Tight end Cade Stover, wide receiver Xavier Johnson and linebacker Tommy Eichenberg are captains for the Buckeyes.

Injury note: RBs TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams OUT

Ohio State’s running back depth will be tested at Purdue. The Buckeyes will be without Miyan Williams, who led the team in rushing last year but hasn’t gotten much run in 2023. Still, with top back TreVeyon Henderson now also out, the absence of Williams is especially notable. Henderson didn’t play last week out of caution, and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said earlier this week that Henderson would be good to go against the Boilermakers. He was listed as “questionable” Saturday but didn’t come out in pads for the second round of warmups at Purdue.

Ohio State also won’t have wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. The junior left the Maryland game in the second half with a leg injury. Day said Tuesday that the Buckeyes don’t expect it to be a long-term issue. Ohio State, of course, would like Egbuka to be ready to play next week against Penn State in what’s shaping up to be to a top-10 showdown in the Horseshoe. Egbuka is second on the team with 22 catches and three receiving touchdowns this season.

Stats to track…

  • Ohio State has made 17 trips to the red zone: 9 have resulted in touchdowns, five have ended in field goals and three turned out to be empty possessions. The Buckeyes are 12th in the league in red zone touchdown percentage (52.94%).
  • Purdue has posted a -0.50 turnover margin per game this season, which, at the start of the week, was tied for 103rd nationally.
  • The Boilermakers’ 45.45% third down conversion rate is fifth best in the Big Ten.
  • Purdue is averaging 3.0 sacks per game. It’s tied for 21st in the FBS in that category.

Ohio State leads the all-time series, 40-15-2. The teams have played just twice in the last decade, starting with an iconic upset in a sold-out Ross-Ade Stadium in 2018. Purdue thumped the then-No. 2 Buckeyes, 49-20, effectively knocking Ohio State out of College Football Playoff contention. The Boilermakers were playing for Tyler Trent, a 20-year-old Purdue student and Boilermakers Superfan who was dealing with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Trent passed in 2019, but his memory — and his team’s remarkable 29-point win over Ohio State — is an integral part of Purdue history.

Ohio State hosted Purdue back in 2021, and the Buckeyes came away with a 59-31 win. That time, it was a top-20 matchup between the Big Ten crossover opponents. The stars of the show in 2018 were Purdue quarterback David Blough, wide receiver Rondale Moore and running back D.J. Knox. In 2021, however, Buckeyes playmakers stole the spotlight, namely quarterback C.J. Stroud, wideout Garrett Wilson and the running back duo of Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson.

Series fun fact

This stat is courtesy of Lettermen Row beat reporter Spencer Holbrook, and it’s not as much “fun” as it is interesting: If you’ve been the Ohio State head coach since 1947, you’ve lost a road game to Purdue. Urban Meyer lost at Purdue in 2018. Luke Fickell fell victim to the house of horrors that is Ross-Ade Stadium for the Buckeyes in 2011. Jim Tressel lost at Purdue in both 2004 and 2009. John Cooper’s 2000 Ohio State team suffered a defeat to the Boilermakers in West Lafayette.

Go back further, and you’ll see that Earle Bruce, Woody Hayes and Wes Fessler also lost road games to Purdue. Ryan Day isn’t on that list. He’ll try to keep it that way this weekend.
