COLUMBUS — Luke Wypler started at center for two years at Ohio State, and he was impressive in both seasons.

Now he is using that experience to take the next step. Wypler declared for the NFL Draft on Tuesday night, a surprising announcement for the third-year New Jersey native.

He announced the decision on Twitter late Tuesday night.

“The Ohio State was a dream. Buckeye nation. My teammates. Coach Day. Coach Frye,” Wypler said in a tweet.” The entire coaching, training and support staff. You help men prepare and compete at their best. Thank you. Lastly, Mom and Dad, my entire family — thank you. Thank you for always supporting and believing in me. Now, it is time for the next step.

“I am officially declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft.”

Wypler was one of the top centers in the country this fall, boasting one of the top Pro Football Focus grades among all centers and helping the Ohio State offense remain one of the top units in America. As good as he was, Wypler was a third-team all-Big Ten performer, according to the league media. But he didn’t make any of the three all-conference teams announced by the coaches of the league.

If he chose to return, Wypler could have solidified the interior of the Ohio State offensive line as it transitions into a new era with a new quarterback.

Instead, he is on to his next chapter: after three years at Ohio State, Luke Wypler is off to the NFL Draft.
