Buckeyes defensive staffer reportedly joining Kevin Wilson on new Tulsa coaching staff

COLUMBUS — Former Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson is leaving the program to become the head coach at Tulsa following the Buckeyes loss in the Peach Bowl to Georgia.

He is taking a key defensive staffer from the Buckeyes program to fill out his new Tulsa coaching staff, as well.

Wilson is hiring Ohio State defensive analyst Matt Guerrieri to become his defensive coordinator, according to Football Scoop’s John Brice.

Guerrieri, who worked with Jim Knowles at Duke, joined the Ohio State staff last offseason along with former Oklahoma State defensive quality control coach Koy McFarland to the staff as analysts. Guerrieri worked with safeties this season and helped the Buckeyes improve defensively from last season as they reached the College Football Playoff.

Guerrieri worked with Knowles at Duke from 2012 to 2017, and he helped Knowles defense become one of the best in the country despite working with talent Ohio State certainly will surpass. Guerrieri has experience working with safeties as a specialty, but he was also involved in defense-wide planning.

Now he’ll have a chance to lead a defense once again after just one year at Ohio State. Kevin Wilson is leaving Columbus and taking one of the young, promising defensive minds on the Buckeyes staff with him.

Matt Guerrieri is set to become the next defensive coordinator for Wilson at Tulsa.
