Buckeyes dominate Phil Steele preseason All-American lists
COLUMBUS — College football preseason magazine legend Phil Steele has released his magazine to stores. And he clearly loves Ohio State this season.
That’s why Steele has Buckeyes stars all over the preseason All-American teams; Steele released a first-team, second-team, third-team and fourth-team All-American lists for the preseason.
Steele has listed senior starting left guard Donovan Jackson as a preseason first-team All-American. He also put the same label on senior defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.
Steele left second-year safety Caleb Downs, a former Alabama superstar and Freshman All-American last year, off his first-team — and put him on the second-team list along with senior running back TreVeyon Henderson, senior defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau and senior cornerback Denzel Burke. All three of those seniors returned to the Buckeyes to win a national title.
As for the third-team, Steele has senior wide receiver Emeka Egbuka on that list. No other Buckeyes are listed as preseason Phil Steele All Americans.
Ohio State rival Michigan has six players on the four preseason All-American teams. Georgia has eight. Alabama has six.
Buckeyes also litter preseason All-Big Ten teams
Steele put out a first-team, a second-team, a third-team and a forth-team list for each conference, including the Big Ten.
On his first-team all-conference lineup, Steele lists seven Buckeyes players. On the offensive side of the ball, he has senior running back TreVeyon Henderson, senior wide receiver Emeka Egbuka and senior starting left guard Donovan Jackson on the first-team All-Big Ten team. Defensively, Steele has four Buckeyes listed. Those players are senior defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, senior defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, senior cornerback Denzel Burke and second-year safety Caleb Downs. Downs, of course, transferred to Ohio State from Alabama after becoming a Freshman All-American for the Crimson Tide as a first-year player. He started games for the Tide.
The other six, of course, all chose to return to the Buckeyes instead of leaving for the NFL this offseason.
Only two Buckeyes players made Phil Steele’s preseason second-team all-conference list. Those Buckeyes are senior starting right tackle Josh Fryar and senior defensive end Jack Sawyer. Both played pivotal roles for the Ohio State lineup last year and need to be stars for this team come this fall.
