Buckeyes open as heavy favorite

Ohio State is still not playing up to its potential.

Sure, the Buckeyes have won their first two games by double-digits against far inferior opponents. And yes, it’s still early in the season. But this program has to begin showing it can hit the next gear soon.

And one week before the Buckeyes go to Notre Dame for an epic top-15 matchup on the road, they’ll have one more chance to impress before that pivotal early-season showdown. The next challenge, however, will be a home date with Western Kentucky.

Ohio State opened as a 26-point favorite over the Hilltoppers, according to Circa Sports book. The total has been set at 60.5, the highest total of the year so far for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State slipping in AP Poll

There was some good that came out of their 35-7 win over Youngstown State Saturday, though. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is off and running after a seven-catch, 160-yard, two-touchdown performance. Kyle McCord looked much more comfortable under center, albeit against FCS competition. And, despite a head scratching start, the Ohio State defense bounced back to hold its second straight opponent to single digits.

The four-score victory wasn’t convincing enough to keep Ohio State in the top five, though. Now, the Buckeyes have dropped in the AP Top 25 back-to-back weeks after starting the season No. 4. They still have a lot to prove, notably in two weeks when they head to South Bend to face No. 9 Notre Dame.
