Taking closer look at state of Buckeyes quarterback room
The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re kicking off our positional weeks with the most important position on the field: quarterbacks.
COLUMBUS — The quarterback taking snaps for Ohio State is changing.
The sky-high expectations aren’t.
Ohio State has sent three straight starting quarterbacks to the Heisman Trophy ceremony and the first round of the NFL Draft. Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud set the standard over the last five seasons for the Buckeyes.
It’s officially on Kyle McCord or Devin Brown to become the next in line this upcoming fall. The Buckeyes believe each of them could be capable of producing at a Heisman Trophy level, and that’s why the competition is moving into the summer without a named starter.
The room, as good as it looks at the top of the pecking order, has some much-needed depth included, as well. Four-star incoming freshman Lincoln Keinholz will begin his Buckeyes career this summer, and veteran Tristan Gebbia arrives from Oregon State as a mentor for the young Ohio State signal-callers around him.

That depth has Ohio State excited.
“The cool thing is we get Lincoln, quarterback of the 2023 recruiting class coming in in the summer, too,” Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said. “So he is going to have to pick things up fast. But I don’t remember the last time we had four guys where we felt like, ‘All right, we’ve got some depth in that room.’
