Buckeyes vs. Notre Dame: Game time, details

Notre Dame is 4-0 on the season and is averaging 50.5 points per game. The Fighting Irish are led by sixth-year quarterback Sam Hartman, who transferred to Notre Dame from Wake Forest after a record-breaking career in the ACC. But it’s not just the Notre Dame offense that has been dominating opponents so far this season. The Irish are allowing just 11.8 points per game so far, but they haven’t seen a collection of talent like the collection assembled by the Buckeyes. For the first time since 1996, Ohio State is heading to South Bend for a massive showdown.

Series fun facts

Ohio State has not lost to Notre Dame since 1936, when the Fighting Irish were led by head coach Elmer Layden, who before becoming he head coach was one of the famed ‘Four Horsemen’ of Notre Dame football under coach Knute Rockne. The Buckeyes were coached by Francis Schmidt.

It’s the Buckeyes first trip to South Bend since 1996 when they beat the Lou Holtz-led Irish. Ohio State, of course, was coached by John Cooper.

Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel beat Notre Dame in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, and former Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer did the same to win the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman played for the Buckeyes when they won that 2006 Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, meanwhile, played for the Fighting Irish when they won the national title in 1973 and was an assistant coach on the 1977 Irish national title team.
