Freshman cornerback Ryan Turner loses black stripe for Buckeyes
COLUMBUS — Ryan Turner has been working to gain ground in the Ohio State secondary since he arrived in Columbus as an early enrollee.
That work is paying off during his freshman campaign. Turner, a former three-star prospect from Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Hollywood, Florida) shed his black stripe for the Buckeyes this week at practice, a mark that signifies that he is officially a member of the football program.
With a thin cornerback room — only six scholarship cornerbacks are on the roster — Ohio State could certainly use Turner to help build the depth behind the on-field contributors. Turner appears to be helping solidify that depth — and add to the future of the room under position coach Tim Walton.
Walton is a big reason why Turner liked the idea of coming to Ohio State.
“I like Coach Walton a lot,” Turner said in February. “He’s a very good coach. He coached [Los Angeles Rams cornerback] Jalen Ramsey. He preaches that a lot. He preaches that he always pushed Jalen Ramsey, no matter how good Jalen Ramsey is, he always pushed him. He never treated him like he was the No. 1 corner in the NFL. He always pushed him no matter what.”
Now with plenty of work with Walton, Ryan Turner is the latest freshman to lose his black stripe for Ohio State. And he is just getting started on making an impact with the Buckeyes.
