Buckeyes matchup against Notre Dame generated record-setting ratings

Ohio State and Notre Dame are two of the most well-known brands in all of sport — not just in college athletics.

So it’s no surprise that when the two college football powerhouses met on the field Saturday night, it drew a massive audience. According to ShowBuzzDaily, the Week One game in the Horseshoe was viewed by 10.5 million people, the largest audience of any Week One game.

The matchup out-drew every game from last season other than the Ohio State vs. Michigan game last November. It was the most-watched game on ESPN since 2017, to boot.

Tommy Eichenberg earns major national honor

Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg was already leading the Buckeyes defense before Saturday night.

Eichenberg was named a captain in training camp, and he set the tone in the buildup to the win over Notre Dame in the Horseshoe. But after his incredible performance, it’s evident he’ll be one of the stars on the defense this fall.

For that performance, Eichenberg was named the FWAA’s Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week winner after piling two sacks and nine total tackles against the Fighting Irish.

ICYMI: Ohio State falls in latest AP Poll

The Buckeyes are leaving Week One with the No. 3 slot in the AP Poll, trailing only defending national runners-up Alabama and national champion Georgia. Michigan and Clemson rounded out the top five.

Ohio State received six first-place votes after the win over No. 8 Notre Dame, showing that there are some pollsters who watched the Buckeyes beat the Fighting Irish at both lines of scrimmage.

The Big Ten has four teams ranked in the second AP Poll of the year, as Michigan (4), Michigan State (14) and Wisconsin (19) join the Buckeyes.

Voters believe that the Buckeyes are still among the national title contenders. They just thought Georgia was better, so the Bulldogs leaped the Buckeyes. Ohio State doesn’t care about those rankings, nor should it.

Now it’s time for Ohio State to finish its nonconference slate with a pair of wins over lesser opponents.
