Buckeyes set to honor 21 seniors Saturday at Ohio Stadium
COLUMBUS — Ohio State will honor its seniors on Saturday prior to kickoff of the home finale against Minnesota.
The Buckeyes are slated to honor 21 seniors, according to the program.
But only four Buckeyes players have used all of their eligibility (hat tip to The Podcast’s Bill Landis for the stat), meaning 17 players could potentially return to Ohio State next season, even after walking on Senior Day.
This isn’t new, the idea of seniors walking, being honored and potentially leaving the door open to still return next season. It’s actually something that’s encouraged by Ohio State. Walk now, make a decision later.
Buckeyes wide receivers coach Brian Hartline said it best Wednesday night when asked if senior receiver Julian Fleming would walk despite having another year of eligibility remaining.
“Anyone that’s capable of leaving is going to walk,” Hartline said. “You don’t want to be in a position and don’t walk and then decide to leave. So I’d rather you walk twice than never walk at all.”
Hartline is right. The Buckeyes want to honor all of the seniors. Take last year for example, when senior safety Josh Proctor, offensive skill weapon Xavier Johnson and starting guard Matthew Jones were all honored on Senior Day — and then later decided to return for another season at Ohio State.
They’ll all three be honored again this Saturday before the home finale. All three are using their last year of eligibility this season.
