Buckeyes behind Georgia in On3 post-spring, post-portal top 25
COLUMBUS — Depending on where you look, Ohio State might be the No. 1 team in the country in preseason and mid-summer polls. Elsewhere, the Buckeyes are second behind Georgia.
No matter where you find the rankings, you’ll likely find the Buckeyes in the top two — without many questions whether any programs are better than Georgia and Ohio State.
On3’s Jesse Simonton, for example, loves what he sees with Ohio State right now. The problem for the Buckeyes, however, is that Simonton likes the Bulldogs just a little bit more. He ranked Georgia over Ohio State in his post-spring, post-portal rankings that came out over Memorial Day weekend.
Simonton’s top five is Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama and new Big Ten addition Oregon. Simonton ranked Michigan at No. 7 and Penn State at No. 12.

Here’s what Simonton wrote about Ohio State being No. 2, behind Georgia:
The Buckeyes are the undisputed 2024 off-season champions, but that won’t mean anything if Ryan Day can’t capitalize on an all-in season this fall. Ohio State is loaded after returning every standout off a Top 5 defense, plus adding the likes of All-American safety Caleb Downs and All-SEC tailback Quinshon Judkins. Interestingly, Day decided not to name Will Howard the team’s starter exiting spring practice, and while the Kansas State transfer remains the likeliest option, Devin Brown and Alabama transfer Julian Sayin will continue to compete at the start of fall camp.

The On3 rankings have six Big Ten teams in the top 25. Along with Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and Penn State, Simonton has two other Big Ten teams in his top 25. He has Nebraska at No. 24 and Iowa at No. 25. The Cornhuskers visit Ohio State on Oct. 26, while Iowa comes to Columbus on Oct. 5.
Ohio State will travel to No. 5 Oregon on Oct. 12 for a massive showdown. The Buckeyes will play Penn State on the road at the beginning of November and wrap up their slate against No. 7 Michigan at home in late November.
