Taking closer look at state of Buckeyes tight ends room
The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re continuing off our positional weeks with the second group up: the Buckeyes tight ends.
COLUMBUS — The top of the Ohio State tight end pecking order is already settled. There is no debate.
Senior captain Cade Stover will lead the way for the Buckeyes as he returns from a breakout season last fall.
While there isn’t any intrigue at the top of the depth chart, there certainly is plenty of it directly beneath Stover. And with talent at every level of the Ohio State offense, in-game reps for tight ends not named Cade Stover will come at a premium.

Fourth-year tight ends Joe Royer and Gee Scott Jr. had an impressive spring and are continuing to take strides forward ahead of a pivotal summer. Both tight ends bring elite receiving skills and an improved blocking pedigree, which will make each of them intriguing options to fit in the offense alongside Stover and the ultra-talented wide receiver group. The battle for tight end No. 2 will be closely monitored all the way until September.
But freshman spring sensation Jelani Thurman is also pushing to have a say in what happens at the second tight end spot. He impressed during his first few months on campus, and he is gunning for serious playing time early in his career. The Buckeyes also have talented tight ends in Sam Hart and Bennett Christian, who could each surprise folks and become a part of the equation this upcoming season.
