COLUMBUS — Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline was reminded of his comments from the spring on Tuesday night.

He remembered back a few months ago, when he said the Buckeyes were six or seven wide receivers deep when it comes to a potential rotation.

So what’s the number now? Does Hartline feel even better about the rotation — and can it get deeper than six or seven receivers?

“That’s a good question,” Hartline said on the field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. “I’m very, very, very pleased. Not to put a number on it. I could, but to sit here and think about that. I mean, we are very healthy in the receiver room. I trust these guys, we got a lot of guys that are, ‘young guys.’ But I don’t feel that on a day to day basis. I mean, it’s a heck of a compliment, in my opinion.

“And I’m really, really excited to watch them mature and grow. Not only the young guys, but the whole group.”

Hartline has good reason to think that. Marvin Harrison Jr. is the best receiver in college football. Emeka Egbuka isn’t far behind, and Julian Fleming is finally healthy. Throw in veteran captain Xavier Johnson, and the Buckeyes have proven leadership to compliment all that talent.

Oh, and then there’s the freshman foursome of Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, Bryson Rodgers and Noah Rogers. All four of them are potential playmakers early in their careers, especially Tate, who is a candidate to play next week against Indiana in the season opener.

Simply put, this is the best wide receiver unit in the country. And yes, it can keep getting better.

Of course, Lettermen Row’s Spencer Holbrook, Andy Backstrom and Tim May were back inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center as Lettermen Row heard from Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes receivers Tuesday evening. The crew breaks down what it heard Tuesday — one of the final preseason camp sessions this August.
