Taking closer look at state of Buckeyes wide receivers room
The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re continuing with our fourth positional week with an incredible collection of talent: the Buckeyes wide receivers.
COLUMBUS — Marvin Harrison Jr. was the best wide receiver in college football last season.
He didn’t need a dust-collecting piece of hardware to prove it. Check the stat sheet and watch the film. Nobody was better than Harrison was for Ohio State.
Harrison makes sure to stay humble, but even he couldn’t believe he didn’t win the Biletnikoff Award last fall.
“Yeah, it does bother me, because I think that’s one of the things you look back on at your college career. You point to that ‘best receiver in the country’ award for that year,” he said in spring ball.
“I think I definitely deserved it.”
Voters around the country instead gave the award to former Tennessee receiver Jaylin Hyatt, putting more fire under Harrison to show up and do even more for an encore to the season he, Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming had a year ago for Ohio State. They’ll be the top three receivers for whoever wins the starting quarterback job this upcoming season.

And there’s so many talented pass-catchers behind them to help boost this unit up as the best wide receiver’s group in the country. Senior leader Xavier Johnson will be a versatile weapon. Freshmen sensations Carnell Tate, Noah Rogers, Bryson Rodgers and Brandon Inniss are poised to push for playing time early. Veteran Jayden Ballard is searching for a chance to break out.
The proven talent is there. The potential is behind it. Ohio State has every tool necessary out wide to be a special unit yet again.
