Scarlet Sunrise: Troy Smith analyzes Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins
Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.Â
Troy Smith on Dwayne Haskins
His performance against Oregon State suggested Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins is ready for the responsibility at such a crucial position for the Buckeyes. And that means he should probably get prepared for a lot more attention and some questions about a possible run at the most coveted individual award in college football.
Troy Smith knows all about both of those things, of course. And now that there is some fresh footage to break down, the former Ohio State star returned to the Lettermen Row film lab to look at a few plays that point to a big year for Dwayne Haskins — and maybe the end of a Heisman drought that dates back to Smith’s trophy-winning season in 2006.

Branden Bowen out indefinitely
Ohio State got some bad news on Thursday as offensive lineman Branden Bowen posted that he underwent another surgery on his leg. A starter last season until suffering a fractured fibula, Bowen was faced with a decision to undergo another operation in order to manage pain and get back to full strength or try to play through the discomfort. Based on a social-media post from his account on Thursday morning, the redshirt junior elected to have the procedure.
Ohio State confirm the surgery on Thursday morning, but a spokesman did not have a timeframe for recovery with Bowen’s latest health setback.
Life as a top recruit
High school juniors can be contacted by coaches beginning on Sept. 1. This year, Lettermen Row recruiting czar Birm got two elite recruits to provide access to their direct messages on Twitter to show how college coaches tried to recruit them. The result is an amazing story that any recruiting fan needs to check out.

Ohio State makes top 5 for TE
Ohio State made the top 5 for Concord (Calif.) De La Salle 4-star Isaiah Foskey, the country’s sixth-ranked tight end. He visited Ohio State in April and came out of that trip impressed by Urban Meyer and the focus on Real Life Wednesdays, and he said he would likely return to the school for an official visit.
To this point there’s no visit planned, but Ohio State’s inclusion on his list signifies that the intention at least remains. Of the top schools on his list, the Buckeyes, Michigan and California each have tight ends committed (Cal has two), while Notre Dame and Washington do not. The Irish signed a pair of tight ends in both 2017 and 2018 and already have two committed for 2020.
