COLUMBUS — Ohio State added another piece to its 2023 defensive class, and it was for a position in dire need: Arvell Reese has committed to the Buckeyes.

The four-star Glenville (Cleveland) linebacker chose the Buckeyes over Kentucky, Michigan, Penn State and others. He is the first linebacker pledge for the Buckeyes in 2023 and is the first linebacker to commit to Ohio State under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

Arvell Reese is the No. 9 rated linebacker and No. 3 player in Ohio according to On3. Reese also is a top 150 prospect according to On3.

A true linebacker, Reese boasts a 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame with impressive downfield movement and play recognition within the box. He’ll head to Ohio State vying for one of the two linebacker spots in the Buckeyes new-look 4-2-5 defense.

His scouting report per On3 makes it clear that Reese is the prototypical linebacker and what kind of potential he’ll bring to the Buckeyes.

One of the more physically-gifted linebacker prospects in the 2023 cycle. Measured at over 6-foot-3, and around 220 pounds with a 32.75-inch arm prior to his senior season. Gained around 20 pounds after the end of his junior year. Turned in multiple 4.65 second 40-yard dash times at a regional camp prior to his senior season. Played a portion of his junior year, working as a linebacker. Showed tantalizing range, athleticism and striking power in the small sample. Has the speed and athleticism to run sideline to sideline. Plants ball carriers on impact. Also has the ability to rush off the edge on passing downs. Transferred to traditional power Glenville prior to his senior season. Has one of the higher upsides among linebackers in the 2023 cycle, but has a smaller body of work at this time. Young for the class – will turn 18 years old right before his first game as a freshman in college.

He becomes an unintentional centerpiece for the Ohio State defensive haul. He’s joined by four-star defensive end Jason Moore and four-star defensive end Will Smith Jr. up front. On the back end is four-star cornerback Jermaine Mathews, four-star cornerback Kayin Lee, four-star cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt, four-star safety Cedrick Hawkins and four-star safety Malik Hartford.

Ohio State has been waiting for its first 2023 linebacker to commit and the wait is now over.

Arvell Reese will be a Buckeye.
