COLUMBUS — Ohio State continues to assemble one of the best defensive classes in the country and it just got better.

Three-star Newberry (Fla) defensive lineman Jarquez Carter has committed to the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-2, 270-pound Floridian committed to Ohio State over Miami, Florida, UCF and Penn State among a couple of dozen offers.

Carter is the No. 403 overall prospect and the No. 36 defensive lineman in the On3 Industry Rankings. He himself said that Ohio State was a team to watch in his recruitment. The Buckeyes had always lingered in the background and weren’t discussed too much throughout his process. Carter had a summer official visit schedule that initially didn’t include Ohio State, but that also changed. He made a midweek official visit in June and gave a snippet to Lettermen Row that in retrospect, showed how legit Ohio State was in the process.

“Ohio State is a school that a lot of people should start paying attention to,” Carter told Lettermen Row. “With all of the schools I’ve been to, they’ve all told me how important official visits are during the summer.

“Ohio State is a real top school for me, they are up there so I had to go see them this summer.”

He is the sixth defensive lineman committed to the Buckeyes’ 2025 class. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson has had quite a bounceback on the trail.

Along with Carter, defensive tackles Maxwell Roy and Trajen Odom are in the class. Edge rushers Zahir Mathis, Zion Grady and London Merritt are in the class.

A trio of impressive linebackers back this defensive line haul with Riley Pettijohn, Tarvos Alford and Eli Lee. And then a monster secondary with five-star Plus+ cornerback duo Devin Sanchez and Na’eem Offord, and safeties Faheem Delane, DeShawn Stewart and Cody Haddad round out the defensive class.

Five-star Bellefontaine (Ohio) quarterback Tavien St. Clair, four-star Cleveland (Ohio) Villa Angela St Joseph running back Bo Jackson, three-star Philadelphia (Pa) St. Joseph’s Prep running back Isaiah West, four-star Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer offensive tackle Carter Lowe, three-star Westerville (Ohio) North interior offensive lineman Jake Cook, four-star Washington (Okla) tight end Nate Roberts, three-star Cleveland (Ohio) Gilmour Academy tight end Brody Lennon, wide receiver Quincy Porter, wide receiver De’Zie Jones, and wide receiver Bodpegen Miller round out the class for Ohio State.

Larry Johnson has landed another massive plug for the middle of the future Ohio State defensive line.
