Four-star safety Jayden Bonsu commits to Ohio State
COLUMBUS — Ohio State received much-needed relief on the defensive recruiting trail on Sunday: Jayden Bonsu has committed to the Buckeyes.
The four-star St. Peters Prep (Hillsdale, New Jersey) safety chose Ohio State over Miami, Alabama, Michigan State, Penn State and others.
After a defensive commitment drought in July that saw Ohio State whiff on a couple of recruiting battles, Bonsu continues the new wave of momentum behind four-star linebacker Arvell Reese who committed the first week of August.
Jayden Bonsu is a top 200 player in the 2023 class and the No. 13 rated safety according to On3.
Ohio State on the defensive end of recruiting took major blows when five-star safety Caleb Downs committed to Alabama and four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson decommitted from the Buckeyes. Bonsu became priority No. 1 for safeties coach Perry Eliano in the aftermath of the Downs commitment and Eliano had ground to make up.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine had Miami as the longtime favorite to land the 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety, but on August 4 the RPM shifted the Buckeyes way at a 63.7-percent chance of landing him.
Bonsu is certainly a talent and his scouting report by On3 makes that clear.
Physical back half defender with striking power and versatility. Well-built and physically-developed at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds. Has good length at safety with arms over 32 inches. Plays in multiple spots for one of the top talent-producing high school programs in New Jersey. Rolls into the box, covers in the slot and plays deep safety at various times. A violent striker who levels ball carriers on impact. Tackles with form, driving through. Shows good anticipation in coverage, undercutting routes. Could potentially grow into a linebacker long-term.

Jayden Bonsu now joins a smaller defensive back class in numbers, the talent and skill set are still very high. Bonsu fills the safety board with four-star Cedrick Hawkins and four-star Malik Hartford. On the perimeters are four-star cornerback Jermaine Mathews, four-star Calvin Simpson-Hunt and four-star Kayin Lee.
Ohio State has found another safety for its 2023 class and perhaps its final take of the cycle.
Jayden Bonsu is going to be a Buckeye.
