COLUMBUS — Ohio State continues its in-home visits before the contact period officially begins.

The Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day, cornerbacks coach Tim Walton and safeties coach Perry Eliano made the quick trip down I-71 South to Cincinnati to visit with four-star cornerback Jermaine Mathews.

Mathews is the second in-state cornerback to commit to Ohio State under Day, joining fellow Cincinnatian cornerback Jyaire Brown.

The 6-foot, 175-pound cornerback is the No. 2 rated cornerback in the 2023 class and the No. 35 overall prospect according to On3. He committed to Ohio State on July 1 after he earned his long-awaited offer after an impressive summer camp display.

Lettermen Row recently caught up with the No. 2-rated Ohio prospect where he reflected upon his senior season at Winton Woods and what his goals are ahead of him heading north to Columbus.

“I think we can be one of the best classes,” Mathews said. “The main goal is beating the team up north every year, and then winning the Big Ten championship and the national championship.”

Mathews exploded on the scene during his senior season. He was a turnover machine for Winton Woods with six interceptions — three of which returned for touchdowns — four forced fumbles and three recovered fumbles.

Part of exploding onto the scene also comes with late offers from major programs. Michigan and Miami have both offered Mathews lately and per CaneSport’s Stephen Wagner, the Hurricanes are making moves to flip him.

It is a dead period, however, and since Day and staff were able to visit him, Mathews is clearly locked in with Ohio State.

He’s a great cornerback and holds a lot of potential that will certainly be utilized once he arrives on campus.
