COLUMBUS — Ohio State is one of the premier college football programs. So whenever the Buckeyes make a decision, it’s going to move the needle.

Ohio State decided to not have a recruiting event during the final weekend of July. Many programs across the country had events like Georgia, Auburn, Oregon, Alabama, LSU and more. The Buckeyes have done events in the past, like last summer with their ‘SummerFest’ event. They didn’t host one going into the 2022 season because of their week one, primetime match-up against Notre Dame at home.

With no primetime game in week one this year, why did Ohio State hold off?

“We talked about it a little bit, but we went four weekends in June,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “Our staff, they didn’t have a day off in the month of June and I just felt like it was the right thing to do. I feel like where we are in recruiting right now is strong, but you know, the wives who are there every weekend and during the week.

“We had in-week visits. We really busted our tail in June. And you know, I think right now it’s showing, where we’re at right now. But I just felt like we took four weekends away from everybody in June, and I felt like it was a good opportunity to get away a little bit and get a three-day weekend. We did that, came back refreshed, and we’ll reassess it every year.”

There won’t be anything to reassess next summer. The recruiting calendar takes a new change starting in 2025 with all of July and August serving as dead periods.

Ohio State holds the top-ranked 2025 recruiting class according to the On3 Team Industry Rankings. The Buckeyes have 24 commits including three five-star prospects. They are still on the recruiting trail for a few more prospects including the country’s top-ranked offensive tackle, David Sanders Jr.
