COLUMBUS — Ohio State didn’t have to go far to land its No. 1 guy, but it had to do some serious work.

Four-star Springfield (Ohio) cornerback Aaron Scott Jr. has committed to the Buckeyes.

Scott chose Ohio State over Michigan, Oregon, Tennesse, Kentucky and Penn State among others.

Scott is the No. 1 Ohio prospect, No. 4 cornerback and No. 29 overall prospect in the 2024 cycle according to On3. He is also the No. 1 Ohio prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings, but slides down to the No. 4 cornerback and No. 42 overall prospect.

His recruitment was one that put Ohio State through the ropes, but those inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center were confident they were going to land him.

“Everything they bring to the table is what I’m looking for,” Scott said. “Being from Ohio and playing for Ohio State, it’s different.”

Scott has developed an impressively deep relationship with head coach Ryan Day, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and secondary coaches Tim Walton and Perry Eliano.

“Man, I’ve got a great relationship with coach Walton and with coach Day,” Scott told Lettermen Row. “Coach Walton checks up on me all the time and we don’t talk about football we talk more about life and how to be a better person.

“I feel like he cares for me for real like if I decide to go to another school, he’d still check up on me. I tell him I go on other visits and he rocks with me, if I did commit somewhere else I feel like he’d still want to talk to me.”

Fortunately for him and Ohio State, Scott didn’t commit elsewhere. He has liked the idea of playing a villain throughout his recruitment, but he ended up being the hero and staying home.

And staying home was a major factor for Scott.

“It’s just so close [to home] man,” he said. “That helps, but it’s also a winning program. If I go there and play right away, the exposure is all right there, I just have to do then what I have to do.”

West is one of the biggest names in the entire Ohio State class let alone the defense.

He joins four-star linebacker tandem Garrett Stover and Payton Pierce. In the secondary, he’s greeted by four-star Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville cornerback Bryce West, four-star Chandler (Ariz) Basha cornerback Miles Lockhart and four-star West Orange (N.J.) Seton Hall Prep Jaylen McClain.

Five-star Chicago (Ill) St. Ignatius defensive lineman Justin Scott rounds out the defensive haul for the Buckeyes.

Scott in practice will get to compete against some of the best wide receivers in the country once he arrives on campus. Five-star duo Jeremiah Smith and Mylan Graham are in the class. Four-star tight end Max LeBlanc will be fun to track down in practice.

And then of course he will also compete against four-star Fairburn (Ga) Langston Hughes quarterback Air Noland.

Ohio State won out in its own backyard against its archrival for the top-rated prospect in the state.

Aaron Scott Jr. is going to be a Buckeye.
