COLUMBUS — Ohio State has some life on the recruiting trail.

Five-star Shaker Heights (Ohio) safety Trey McNutt has delayed his commitment and set a new date for Aug. 3. The No. 20 overall prospect and No. 2 safety in the On3 Industry Rankings has a final list of Oregon, Ohio State, Texas A&M, USC and Florida.

The decision to move it comes because a few key people he would like to be in attendance will not be able to make it on Friday, according to On3’s Steve Wiltfong.

Ohio State offered McNutt in April 2023 and it’s been quite a ride ever since.

Ohio State has always been an interesting program in this recruitment. The Buckeyes didn’t have much of a presence in this race during the fall. It wasn’t until Matt Guerrieri was hired in January that the Buckeyes started moving the needle. Guerrieri is a native of East Cleveland and the reliability between the two was the foundation for Ohio State.

McNutt had visited Ohio State a few times before Guerrieri was hired but made several visits afterward. He was on campus in January. He showed up a few times throughout the spring to see the Buckeyes’ spring practices.

But he never scheduled an official visit with the Buckeyes this summer. His recruitment took a heightened turn around the end of April. He took official visits to Oregon, Texas A&M, Florida and USC.

The communication between him and Ohio State never stopped, but McNutt has been very dedicated to finding the best place for him.

Trey McNutt Scouting Report via On3

Rangy safety prospect who has the ability come downhill and be force player in the run game, play center field as a single high safety, or match up in man to man in the slot. Tremendous versatility in the secondary at the next level and beyond. Physical and violent player, not afraid to stick his head into traffic and make plays around the line of scrimmage. Excellent burst and trigger out of his backpedal. Strong ability to read and diagnose what offenses are doing in front of him. Need to see more from him in terms of ball production, but has excellent ball skills and ability to high point the football. Excellent upside with a frame that should be able to fill out with ease in a collegiate strength and conditioning program.
