Five-star safety, Ohio State target Trey McNutt announces commitment date
COLUMBUS — Ohio State won’t have to wait long to find out if it will add another member to its loaded secondary class.
Five-star Shaker Heights (Ohio) safety Trey McNutt will announce his commitment on July 19. McNutt has a final group of Florida, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M and USC. The 5-foot-11.5, 183-pound Ohioan is the No. 20 overall prospect and the No. 2 safety according to the On3 Industry Rankings. On3 has McNutt ranked as the No. 47 overall prospect and the No. 2 safety.
This is likely going to be an uncomfortable commitment announcement for Ohio State fans. Oregon is the clear-cut favorite for McNutt and the early decision date paints a very clear picture. He made an official visit to Eugene from June 21 to June 23 and that weekend seemingly moved the needle in a big direction for McNutt.
While he has taken multiple visits to Ohio State, he did not make an official visit this summer. Even if he commits to Oregon, he will likely take an official visit to Ohio State during the season.

The Buckeyes have three safeties committed to their top-ranked 2025 class as of now. Faheem Delane, DeShawn Stewart and Cody Haddad are all in the class for first-year safeties coach Matt Guerrieri.
Trey McNutt Scouting Report via On3
Rangy safety prospect who has the ability to come downhill and be a force player in the run game, play center field as a single high safety, or match up in man to man in the slot. Tremendous versatility in the secondary at the next level and beyond.
Physical and violent player, not afraid to stick his head into traffic and make plays around the line of scrimmage. Excellent burst and trigger out of his backpedal. Strong ability to read and diagnose what offenses are doing in front of him. Need to see more from him in terms of ball production, but has excellent ball skills and the ability to high-point the football. Excellent upside with a frame that should be able to fill out with ease in a collegiate strength and conditioning program.
