COLUMBUS — Ohio State has commitment No. 12 in its 2020 recruiting class. Pickerington Central defensive lineman Ty Hamilton has pledged to the Buckeyes.

The younger brother of current Ohio State lineman Davon Hamilton, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Hamilton picked Ohio State just hours after returning home from his official visit with the program and one week after an official visit to Penn State. His scheduled official visit to Michigan next week will no longer happen.

“I looked over those three schools and I asked myself what school would give me the best chance to be a difference maker — Ohio State was the one,” Hamilton told Lettermen Row on Sunday afternoon. “So, after talking to my parents today, I’ve decided to commit to Ohio State.”

The state of Ohio’s 26th-ranked prospect, Hamilton held offers from 20 total schools. But the chance to work alongside Larry Johnson and to stay close to home with the Buckeyes was something that made the most sense for him.

“It’s about just being a part of something bigger than myself,” Hamilton said. “Seeing my brother already walking through that door, that just made me think that I can do the same. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be coached by the best defensive line coach in America?”

Hamilton informed the Ohio State coaching staff of his decision on Sunday afternoon.

“They are hyped,” he said. “Coach Johnson said he is excited and that he can’t wait for what the future holds. And he’s happy about being able to coach two brothers again.”

The addition of Hamilton increases the Buckeyes lead as the Big Ten’s top-ranked recruiting class and moves Ohio State ahead of Florida as the nation’s seventh-ranked class. The defensive lineman is the second defensive commitment for Ohio State, joining defensive back Lejond Cavazos. He is also the fifth player from Ohio to commit to the Buckeyes in Ryan Day’s first-full recruiting class.
