COLUMBUS — Ohio State lost its longest committed prospects in one of the more sturdy position boards: Ty Lockwood has decommited from the Buckeyes.

The four-star Independence (Thompson’s Station, Tennessee) tight end announced his decision via Twitter on Monday, flipping directly into Alabama’s top-ranked 2023 recruiting class.

“First of all, I’m grateful for Ohio State, the coaching staff and the Buckeyes players and fans. I have a lot of respect for the program and the team. I’ve been all in with Buckeye nation, so this decision and announcement is hard for me.”

“After much discussion and prayer, my family and I have decided that it would be best to decommit from Ohio State University.”

Ty Lockwood committed to Ohio State back in August 2021 and was the first in the 2023 cycle to make his pledge to the Buckeyes. Lockwood picked up his Ohio State offer in February 2021 and it was the only school throughout his recruitment he visited more than once.

Lockwood took his only official visit to Ohio State back in June during one of the larger visit weekends for the program and while his recruitment seemed a lock, another program has entered the scene.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound tight end earned an offer from Alabama on July 29 and took four days to decommit from the Buckeyes.

After the commitment of four-star quarterback Brock Glenn and the decommitment of four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson along with Lockwood, Ohio State currently has 18 pledges to its 2023 class. While their class remains at the top amongst the schools in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes have slipped considerably in the national rankings going from first to fourth.

While having Lockwood decommit is certainly an unwanted position to be in, Ohio State still has another tight end pledge in the class with four-star Langston Hughes (Fairburn, Georgia) prospect Jelani Thurman.

The Buckeyes begin the month of August with momentum behind them on the recruiting trail. Brock Glenn and his commitment on July 30 provided a much-needed boost for Ohio State, but with the decommitment of Lockwood, it’s another step backward.
