COLUMBUS — Former Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley appeared in his second career major championship this weekend.

He’s now 2-2 in making the cut and finishing as the low amateur. Yes, Shipley played the weekend at Pinehurst No. 2 after an impressive two-day stretch of golf — and then went on to win the low-amateur award at the US Open.

The former Buckeyes star shot an opening-round 70 (E) and followed it up with a second-round 73 to make the cut by two strokes. He then shot a Saturday 71 and then a Sunday 72 to win the award by two shots over former Florida State golfer Luke Clanton.

Shipley is just the 10th golfer all-time to earn low amateur honors at The Masters and the US Open in the same season. Ohio State legend — and all-time majors winner — Jack Nicklaus did it in 1960. Phil Mickelson (1991), Viktor Hovland (2019) and Matt Kuchar (1998).

The US Open was Shipley’s final tournament as an amateur — only because that’s how he qualified for the golf season’s third major. By finishing runner-up at last fall’s US Amateur, Shipley earned an exemption into The Masters, where he was the low amateur — and the US Open. Following this weekend, Shipley will begin his pro career.

Shipley was the lone Ohio State golfer to make the cut. Fellow Buckeyes star Maxwell Moldovan also played in the US Open, but he missed the cut.

Moldovan previously qualified for the 2022 US Open at The Country Club, where he also missed the cut. He turned around last year and made the cut as an amateur, playing all four rounds at Los Angeles Country Club and finishing in 65th place, last among those to make the cut.

Now both Shipley and Moldovan will begin their careers next week on the PGA Tour Americas. They’ll tee off Thursday in The Beachlands Victoria Open presented by Times Colonist.
