Ohio State Athletics again reports record revenue in fiscal year 2023

Ohio State Athletics generated $279,549,337 in revenue in fiscal year 2023 (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023), according to a university release this week.

That’s an 11% increase from the department’s previous fiscal year, during which it bested its revenue record at the time with $251,615,345 generated, per the NCAA’s annual financial report.

“Ohio State Athletics remain on a rock-solid foundation thanks to the tremendous support from our fans, students and alumni,” Buckeyes Athletic Director Gene Smith said in the statement. “They continue to show up, tune in and support our student-athletes, coaches and staff at our fields, stadiums and arenas.”

Ohio State generated $73.3 million in ticket sales — which remain the largest source of revenue for the department — including $64.3 million from football during a 2022 season that featured eight home games, most notably top-five showdowns versus Notre Dame and Michigan. The Buckeyes opened the year with a 21-10 win over the Fighting Irish but closed the regular season with a sobering 45-23 defeat to the Wolverines, the program’s first defeat to its arch rival in Columbus since 2000.

For reference, Ohio State Athletics reported $59,649,921 in ticket sales across all sports in fiscal year 2022.

There was even a slight rise in revenue generated from media rights, which totaled $49,796,025 in fiscal year 2023, compared to the $48,908,898 it reeled in during fiscal year 2022. Donations — whether that be from individuals, companies or foundations — came out to $57.8 million, according to the university release.

On the other hand, the total operating expenses in fiscal year 2023 were $274,948,554. The university, which supports 36 varsity sports and more than 1,000 student-athletes, reported reported $23,829,914 in athletic student aid.

Ohio State can’t keep pace with Rienk Mast, Nebraska’s 3-point shooting

Ohio State return to the win column was short-lived. After snapping a three-game losing streak over the weekend against Penn State, the Buckeyes suffered another setback Tuesday night at Nebraska.

Cornhuskers center Rienk Mast knocked down a career-high six 3-pointers, piling up a personal-best 34 points, 10 rebounds and four assists en route to an 83-69 win in Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Ohio State failed to slow Mast, or Nebraska in general, from beyond the arc. The Huskers finished 14-of-27 from downtown in the blowout victory.

Roster Reset: Examining Buckeyes loaded running back room

Lettermen Row is continuing its “Roster Reset” series with a look at the Buckeyes’ running back room, which, of course, is spearheaded by the two-headed monster of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins.

Henderson put the NFL Draft on pause and decided to return for his senior season. Judkins transferred in from Ole Miss as a two-time All-SEC back.

Both Henderson and Judkins have surpassed the 1,000-yard single-season rushing mark in their careers, and both have three-down back skill sets.

We covered more than just those two when looking ahead to the position group in 2024. Check it out here.
