Ohio State assistant Brandon Bailey reportedly leaving for DePaul
COLUMBUS — Another Ohio State assistant is reportedly headed to DePaul. Brandon Bailey is taking job with former Buckeyes head coach Chris Holtmann, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Holtmann brought Bailey in ahead of the 2023-24 season to help Ohio State right the ship defensively, alongside fellow defensive assistant Jack Owens.
When all was said and done, Ohio State finished 63rd in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency. For reference, the Buckeyes hadn’t ranked that high in that category since they were 19th in the 2019-20 season. Ohio State allowed 70.2 points per game this season, good for seventh in the Big Ten.
Bailey is a Chicago native and graduated from DePaul in 2009 with a degree in sociology. He also began his coaching career at his alma mater, where spent time with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Bailey wound up serving as the director of operations for the Blue Demons.
Then he launched a lengthy career with the Boston Celtics organization in 2011. He spent time as a video coordinator for the Celtics and, notably, was the head coach of the Maine Red Claws, the Celtics G League affiliate, from 2017-19.

After leading the Red Claws, Bailey started working as an assistant under Brad Stevens in 2019. In 2021-22, he was an assistant coach for Team USA. Last year, he was an assistant coach, as well as the head of player development, for the Detroit Pistons.
Now Bailey is headed back home and to his alma mater, where he’ll link up again with Holtmann, who already brought Owens with him before Ohio State began NIT play.
Jake Diebler, who took over for the Buckeyes when Holtmann was fired on Feb. 14, has made one staff hire so far. He added former University of South Carolina Upstate and Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson to the Ohio State bench. Dickerson previously coached seven seasons at Ohio State under Thad Matta, including six as Matta’s associate head coach.
