COLUMBUS — Ohio State forward Brice Sensabaugh was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday.

Sensabaugh is coming off a season-high, 22-point outing in the Buckeyes’ 89-84 overtime loss to North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic, where he made his second career start.

Sensabaugh got the nod again with Oklahoma State graduate transfer guard Isaac Likekele — who started the first eight games of the year — still working through a “family matter.”

Sensabaugh made the most of his season-high 33 minutes of action, shooting 9-of-17 from the field, including 2-of-6 from deep. It was Sensabaugh’s most complete game of his young Buckeyes career. He added eight rebounds, three of which came on the offensive glass. And, although he committed three turnovers, he did have three assists.

Sensabaugh still has a ways to go defensively, but he held his own versus the Tar Heels, registering the third-best defensive rating (103.6) of any player in the Buckeyes rotation Saturday. He also notched the third-best stop percentage, which is the rate of defensive possessions where the opposing team did not score (49%). Plus, his 15.8 defensive rebound rate was good for second on the team.

Most notably, Sensabaugh made a potential game-winning bucket that fell with three seconds remaining in regulation: a pump fake and make field goal from mid-range. It was a display of immediate growth from nine days earlier against Rutgers — head coach Chris Holtmann drew up a game-winning shot for Sensabaugh in that game, except his runner was blocked.

This time, the Orlando, Florida, native pulled through.

Sensabaugh, the highest-rated signee in Ohio State’s eighth-ranked 2022 class, leads the Buckeyes with 14.9 points per game, and he’s 10th among all freshmen nationally in scoring. He’s finished in double figures in nine of Ohio State’s 10 games this season.
