Bruce Thornton out versus Nebraska, misses first career game

COLUMBUS — Ohio State point guard Bruce Thornton is out Thursday night against Nebraska. Thornton is dealing with a migraine, per source.
Thornton has played in, and started, every game since his Buckeyes career began in 2022. The sophomore star leads Ohio State with 16.2 points per game and is fifth in the country with a 3.66:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Thornton has eclipsed the 20-point mark eight times this season. He’s coming off an 11-point, four-rebound and three-assist performance at Michigan State, where the Buckeyes ended their program-record, 17-game road losing streak.
Dale Bonner — Thornton’s replacement in the starting lineup against Nebraska — was the hero in the Buckeyes’ 60-57 victory over the Spartans. Bonner beat the buzzer with a game-winning 3-pointer.
Bonner averages 18.5 minutes, 4.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game this season while shooting just 31.4% from the field, including 29.0% from beyond the arc. Bonner is fourth on the team with 20 3-pointers this season.

The Baylor grad transfer has spelled Thornton at the point this season, in addition to playing alongside him, or Roddy Gayle Jr., in the Ohio State backcourt.
Ohio State enters Thursday having won two of its last three games, and both of those wins were in Quad 1-A games, according to BartTorvik. Before the Buckeyes took down Michigan State on the road, they upset then-No. 2 Purdue at the Schottenstein Center.
That mini late-season spurt has followed the firing of head coach Chris Holtmann, who was replaced by interim head coach Jake Diebler.
