Ohio State guard Emma Shumate enters transfer portal

Emma Shumate is back in the transfer portal after spending two seasons at Ohio State. The Newark High School product and Dresden, Ohio, native began her career at West Virginia but was only with the Mountaineers for one semester before transferring to Ohio State in the spring of 2022.

After redshirting her first collegiate season, Shumate appeared in 31 games during the 2022-23 campaign. Although she didn’t score during the Buckeyes’ NCAA Tournament run to the Elite Eight, she averaged 11.1 minutes, 1.6 points. 1.0 rebound and 0.9 blocks per game on the season.

She even led the team with 27 blocks.

This time around, Shumate played a bigger role. While she played fewer minutes — only 9.6 per game — and her blocks were down from 27 to nine, she averaged 4.0 points per game and shot 41.8% from beyond the arc. Her 28 triples were good for fourth most on the team. The other three Buckeyes with more 3-pointers this season — Jacy Sheldon (60), Celeste Taylor (40) and Rebeka Mikulášiková (40) — are all graduating.

Shumate chipped in five points during Ohio State’s NCAA Tournament opening-round win over Maine. Her most notable performance this season, however, came against Ohio when she knocked down six 3-pointers and scored 22 points in 22 minutes.

“Buckeye Nation, I cannot put into words how much your persistent love and support has meant to me the past two years,” Shumate wrote on social media. “Thank you for making my time here so special.

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for my home state of Ohio. I am taking some truly invaluable memories and friendships with me.”

Even after missed buzzer-beater, Jamison Battle can only appreciate prolific college career

Jamison Battle’s potential game-winner at the buzzer didn’t fall during Tuesday’s NIT quarterfinal against Georgia. But, as Battle’s career came to an end, all he could do was appreciate his five-year journey that saw him play for three different programs, suit up for 138 game and score more than 2,000 points.

“There’s always going to be an end to something,” Battle said. “But I think back of what I did in my college career and the growth that I had and just the times that I had with so many different people, and there’s so many different people I met, and it’s just a culmination of those things.

“You can never take that stuff for granted. And there’s no reason for me to sit back and be like, ‘Oh, man, it’s over.’ It’s over, but I know there’s something in the future for me.”
