COLUMBUS — Ohio State junior wing Eugene Brown III entered the transfer portal Thursday after averaging just 10.1 minutes per game this season.

“I want to thank the entire coaching staff, strength coaches, trainers, doctors, media, professors and fans who have supported me during my three years here,” Brown wrote in a social media message. “The lessons, experiences and bonds I have created while here will forever be a chapter in my life journey that has made me who I am today.. so again thank you!”

Brown continued: “After much prayer and consideration amongst my family, I will be entering the transfer portal.”

Brown appeared in 77 games across his three-year Buckeyes career after arriving at Ohio State as the 119th overall prospect in the 2020 class, according to On3, out of Southwest DeKalb in Conyers, Georgia.

In 2022-23, the versatile and lengthy 6-foot-7, 195-pound Brown missed the first 11 games with a concussion that he suffered during the preseason. He was also sidelined the previous year for four games with a concussion.

Once Brown returned to the floor, he had to carve out a role for himself in the Buckeyes’ rotation again. That came when center Zed Key went down with a shoulder sprain, and Ohio State needed more help in the post. Particularly down the stretch of the season — when Key was shut down for the year — Brown ended up serving as a makeshift five for head coach Chris Holtmann, often being tasked with defending bigs a handful of inches taller and several pounds heavier than him.

Brown gave it his best try and, on occasion, offered Ohio State a scoring lift, contributing five or more points three times in the final nine games of the season.

He finished the year averaging 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds while accounting for six 3-pointers, the eighth most on the team.

Brown saw the most action of his career as a sophomore when he started 10 games, played in 26 total and averaged a career-high 17 minutes per outing. He logged only 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, but he turned in some memorable performances in the process. That included his 10-point, six-rebound, three-steal, two-block stat line in the Buckeyes’ overtime win over Indiana in February, and his game-saving block in regulation that set the stage for an overtime victory against Nebraska in January.

Because of the COVID-19 year, Brown has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
