VIA “LESSONS LEARNED FROM BUCKEYES EMERALD COAST CLASSIC TITLE

Ohio State is 5-1, fourth in the receiving votes section of this week’s AP Top 25 and — most importantly — coming together right before Big Ten play starts Sunday night against Minnesota.

The Buckeyes took home the Emerald Coast Classic over the weekend in Niceville, Florida, first defeating then-No. 17 Alabama, 92-81, in a track meet and then blowing out Santa Clara, 86-56, in the early-season tournament’s championship game.

Bruce Thornton was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Backcourt mate Roddy Gayle Jr. also made the All-Tournament Team. Both reached career highs in the scoring department against Alabama, and the duo combined for 11 assists the following night versus Santa Clara.

“I feel like it gave us a lot of confidence and just showed us what we capable of doing on the defensive side of the ball and on the offensive side of the ball,” Thornton said of the Buckeyes hoisting a trophy the first month of the season.

“I feel like we really came together this weekend. We played two great teams, Alabama and Santa Clara. They’re really top-tier teams that we’ll probably see down the line in March. But I feel like this past weekend, I feel like we just locked in together as a team.”
