LETTERMAN ROW FUBO AFI

COLUMBUS — Ohio State (11-2, 1-1 Big Ten) will play its first Big Ten game in 25 days when it hosts Rutgers (8-4, 0-1) Wednesday night.

The Buckeyes are coming off another key neutral site victory, this one a 78-75 overtime win against West Virginia in Cleveland. Earlier this season, they beat UCLA in Atlanta as part of the CBS Sports Classic and both Alabama and Santa Clara in Niceville, Florida, as part of the Emerald Coast Classic.

Ohio State has yet to win its first true road game. Before they will get another shot at that, however, the Buckeyes are set to face the Scarlet Knights.

The last time these teams met in Columbus, now-former Ohio State wing Tanner Holden drilled a buzzer-beating and game-winning 3-pointer that the Big Ten later admitted shouldn’t have counted.

Rutgers avenged that defeat with an overtime win over the Buckeyes the following month in Piscataway. Ohio State leads the all-time series against the Scarlet Knights, 11-5, and is a perfect 7-0 versus the Scarlet Knights at home.

Ohio State began Big Ten competition with a win over Minnesota back on Dec. 3. Less than a week later, the Buckeyes blew what was, at one point, an 18-point lead at Penn State.

Head coach Chris Holtmann’s team will hope to get above .500 in conference play Wednesday night.

What to know about Rutgers…

+ Rutgers began the season with a loss to Princeton before rattling off five wins in a row, including a victory over Georgetown. But back-to-back, double-digit defeats to Illinois and Wake Forest set the Scarlet Knights back. They responded with maybe their best win of the year, a 70-63 triumph on the road versus Seton Hall. Since, wins over LIU and Stonehill have sandwiched a 10-point loss to Mississippi State.

+ Rutgers is led by head coach Steve Pikiell, who has guided the Scarlet Knights to three straight postseason trips, the first two of which went to the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers was also on track to make The Dance in 2020 before March Madness was canceled because of COVID-19.

+ The Scarlet Knights are paced by sixth-year forward Aundre Hyatt, who is tops on the team with 12.3 points per game. Although he’s shooting 36.2% from deep with a team-high 25 makes from long range, his field goal percentage is just 38.8%.

+ The only other Rutgers player averaging double figures is senior Clifford Omoruyi. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound center is the best shot blocker in the Big Ten, averaging 3.4 rejections per game to go along with his 11.4 points and 9.1 rebounds. For reference, Ohio State’s Felix Okpara and Purdue’s Zach Edey are tied for second in the league with 2.3 blocks per contest.
