Buckeyes OT Avery Henry announces bone cancer diagnosis

Ohio State freshman offensive tackle Avery Henry announced on Twitter Monday that he has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer that is most commonly found in teenagers and young adults.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, osteosarcoma “is a type of bone cancer that usually develops in the osteoblast cells that form bone.” Approximately 800 new cases of osteosarcoma are reported in the U.S. every year, and about half of those cases are in children and teens, per hopkinsmedicine.org.

“This isn’t the way I wanted to release this, but I know no other way,” Henry said via Twitter. “A couple days ago I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. I will fight this! I have never been a statistic and I never will! I want to thank my brothers and coaches for the endless support!”

Henry received an outpouring of support on Twitter from current and future Buckeyes teammates after his announcement Monday night.

Henry joined the team in June as a late addition to Ohio State’s 2022 class. The 6-foot-6, 309-pound offensive lineman from St. Clairsville, Ohio, was rated as a three-star prospect in the On3 Consensus. He was also rated as the No. 50 offensive tackle nationally and the No. 23 overall prospect in Ohio last cycle, according to On3.

Henry didn’t play a snap in 2022. He’ll have a chance to redshirt and still have four seasons of eligibility remaining.

Buckeyes target transfer OT Ajani Cornelius making decision Wednesday

Rhode Island transfer Ajani Cornelius, the top offensive tackle transfer this cycle according to On3, will be making his commitment decision Wednesday. Cornelius visited Ohio State over the weekend and included the Buckeyes in his top four, along with Nebraska, Oregon and Tennessee.

Cornelius was unranked out of Harlem (New York) Stepinac in the On3 Consensus. He originally committed to Howard before flipping to and signing with URI, where he started a total of 22 games at right tackle across the 2021 and 2022 seasons after sitting out his first two years on campus.

He allowed just one sack and six pressures this season while registering a 91.0 Pro Football Focus run blocking grade. Cornelius was a big part of a Rams offense that posted the third-most points per game (30.6) in the CAA and ranked fourth in rushing yards per game (168.8) in 2022.

Cornelius has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Ohio State drops out of AP Top 25, Brice Sensabaugh named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Ohio State dropped out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since the fourth week of November after letting a 14-point, first-half lead slip against North Carolina in this past weekend’s CBS Sports Classic. The overtime defeat went down as the Buckeyes’ third loss of the season, and it was enough to push them out of the AP Top 25, where there are now just four Big Ten teams ranked.

They are No. 1 Purdue, No. 16 Illinois, No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 18 Indiana. Ohio State is eighth in receiving votes (33) behind North Carolina (36), Memphis (59), New Mexico (64), Charleston (68), Xavier (71), West Virginia (74) and Maryland (78).

Ohio State was previously ranked No. 23. So that was the bad news for the Buckeyes.

The good news? First-year forward Brice Sensabaugh was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Sensabaugh is coming off what was probably his most complete game of his young Buckeyes career: He set a season high with 22 points, added eight rebounds — three of which came on the offensive glass — and notched three assists to offset three turnovers.

Sensabaugh still has a ways to go defensively, but he held his own versus the Tar Heels, registering the third-best defensive rating (103.6) of any player in the Buckeyes rotation Saturday.

The Orlando, Florida, native made his second career start, with Oklahoma State graduate transfer guard Isaac Likekele — who started the first eight games of the year — still working through a “family matter.”
