Devin Brown unavailable for spring game following procedure
COLUMBUS — Ohio State redshirt freshman quarterback Devin Brown will miss Saturday’s spring game with an injury to a finger on his throwing hand.
Brown had a procedure on that hand Wednesday, head coach Ryan Day said. Day is optimistic about the timeline of Brown’s return, however.
“[He] should have pretty much a full summer,” Day said.
Brown has been competing with junior Kyle McCord for QB1 this offseason. The Buckeyes are replacing two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and soon-to-be top-five NFL Draft pick C.J. Stroud.
Now, Ohio State will be down to two scholarship quarterbacks for Saturday’s intrasquad exhibition: McCord and seventh-year Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia.
Day made it clear that McCord and Brown were on an even playing field at the start of spring. That said, McCord came into the offseason with a season more of experience, plus he’s already has a start under his belt, as he filled in for an injured Stroud against Akron early in the 2021 season.
Day explained earlier this month that neither McCord nor Brown had separated from one another in the two-way race for the starting job under center. This past Friday, he noted progress, but he made it clear that the Buckeyes are “not there yet.”

When asked about his confidence level if McCord had to start a game right now, Day had this to say:
“It’s hard to say right now because there’s still so much more to go here. I don’t think anybody’s really ready to play right now.”
Back in February, Day said that he would like to have a decision made about a starting quarterback by spring’s end, but he has yet to name one.
Both McCord and Brown were five-star recruits and top-five quarterbacks in their respective classes.
Ohio State has, notably, already been without three of its top-four returning wideouts and its two starting linebackers this spring.
