Eight Ohio State players named Iron Buckeyes

With winter and summer workouts in the past, the Ohio State strength and conditioning staff, led by Mickey Marotti, recognized its top performers from the offseason. It did so by naming eight Iron Buckeyes, an annual honor that goes to Ohio State players with “unquestionable training, dedication, determination, discipline, toughness, leadership and grind.”

Those eight Buckeyes players are defensive tackle Ty Hamilton, linebackers Cody Simon and Tommy Eichenberg, tight end Cade Stover, running back Chip Trayanum, wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka as well as safety Lathan Ransom.

Stover and Eichenberg were Iron Buckeyes last year, too. It’s important to note that, in 2022, five of Ohio State’s six captains — including Stover and Eichenberg — were Iron Buckeyes. Defensive end Tyler Friday, wide receiver Kam Babb and now-linebacker Kourt Williams II were the other three Ohio State players to hold both titles last year.

Most of this year’s Iron Buckeyes are players who are expected to start in 2023. With an encore year, Harrison and Egbuka could leave Ohio State as the best Buckeyes wide receiver duo all-time. Ransom was a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist last season. Eichenberg received second-team All-American honors. And Stover was the first Buckeyes tight end to catch more than 30 passes in a season since Ben Hartsock in 2003.

Hamilton might also start, but he’ll at the very least have a significant rotational role at defensive tackle. Simon is expected to be Ohio State’s go-to third linebacker when it deviates from its base 4-2-5 defense. Trayanum, who had one of the best springs of any Buckeyes player this year, is in line to make some kind of impact in a crowded running back room that needed everyone in it last season.

Observations from first day of Ohio State training camp

Ohio State training camp is underway. The Buckeyes hosted their first practice Thursday in the Columbus heat on the outdoor fields of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Lettermen Row was on site to get a first summer look at the 2023 Buckeyes, who are searching for the program’s first national championship in close to a decade and a way to once again turn the tide in their rivalry with Michigan.

Ohio State 2024 Recruiting Class Prediction 2.0

Ohio State still has some work to do on the recruiting trail this cycle. After all, despite already having 19 commits, the Buckeyes are trying to build out what will probably be one of the biggest classes in the country this time around.

It’s a group that currently is second in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Can the Buckeyes still seize the top spot?

It’d be tricky, but Ohio State can round out a great class regardless. In July, Lettermen Row predicted how the class would turn out. We’re running back that exercise in August.
