Former Ohio State DBs Jahsen Wint, Amir Riep resuming college football careers

Former Ohio State defensive backs Jahsen Wint and Amir Riep were acquitted back in February on charges of rape and kidnapping. They were originally arrested and indicted three years earlier, at which point Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day dismissed them from the team.

Rather than Wint and Riep potentially facing more than 30 years in prison, each of them were found not guilty and, now, have a chance to resume their college football careers.

Wint, who piled up 39 total tackles while playing safety at Ohio State in 35 games from 2017-19, committed to Marshall. He announced his decision Sunday in a YouTube video. Wint would have been in the mix for playing time at strong safety during the Buckeyes’ 2020, COVID-19-shortened season.

His lone career start came against Oregon State in the opener of the 2018 season. It was the beginning of Wint’s most active year at Ohio State, as he factored into the safety rotation, logging 174 defensive snaps and a 78.6 tackling grade, per Pro Football Focus.

Meanwhile, Riep revealed his commitment to Lincoln University (Oakland, California) on Friday. Lincoln debuted its football program in 2021 and will play mostly FCS schools this season.

Riep was a cornerback for Ohio State, also playing from 2017-19. He appeared in 40 games for the Buckeyes in that span and was considered an option to start in place of first rounders Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette at the position in 2020.

Whereas Wint played his most snaps for the Buckeyes in 2018, Riep made his biggest impact for the scarlet and gray in 2019. That year, Riep registered 20 total tackles and picked off a pair of passes, including one against Michigan in a 56-27 dismantling of the Wolverines. He allowed just nine receptions for 138 yards on 18 targets in 2019, according to PFF, which gave him a coverage grade of 78.1.

That’s good news for Ohio State, which will be led by a new starting quarterback this season: either junior Kyle McCord other redshirt freshman Devin Brown. Those two former five-star prospects will continue to battle for QB1 this summer.

Lettermen Row‘s Tim May took a look at those four seasons where a first-year Buckeyes starting quarterback has guided the program to a national title.

Five Questions as Ohio State looks to continue successful run of tight end play

It’s “Tight End” week at Lettermen Row. We kicked things off on Memorial Day with five questions about the position group. Keenan Bailey, now in his eighth season with the program, was promoted from within to lead the room and replace former Ohio State tight ends coach and offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who departed this offseason for the Tulsa head coaching job.

Although the Buckeyes have a new face in charge of the tight end unit, they are returning their top performer at the position from last year: Cade Stover. Rather than turning pro, Stover decided to run it back in Columbus for one more season and try to build off his 36-catch, five-touchdown 2022 campaign.

How exactly Stover will follow up his breakout season is one of five Ohio State tight end topics we explored. Check it out here.
