San Diego State transfer OT Josh Simmons commits to Ohio State
COLUMBUS — Ohio State has its transfer offensive tackle. Former San Diego State right tackle Josh Simmons committed to the Buckeyes on Sunday evening after visiting the program Friday.
The Buckeyes had been searching for tackle help in the current transfer window, which spans from April 15 to April 30, after a shaky spring season.
Zen Michalski and Tegra Tshabola — third and second-year O-Linemen who were reserves at left tackle and right guard last season, respectively — have been competing for the starting right tackle job this offseason. But, now, it appears Simmons will be in the mix, too.
He announced the decision on his social media pages.
“First off I would like to thank every school that reached out and gave me an opportunity to play at their respective program,” Simmons said Sunday in that statement. “With that being said, I will be furthering my academic and football career at The Ohio State University.”
Simmons visited Ohio State this weekend before announcing his commitment. The La Mesa, California, native was a four-star prospect coming out of Helix High School. He was the No. 24 interior offensive lineman in the 2021 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Simmons was offered by now-Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye when Frye was the offensive line coach at UCLA. He didn’t end up choosing the Bruins, as Simmons ended up in San Diego instead.
As a redshirt freshman, Simmons played 799 offensive snaps last season as the Aztecs’ starting right tackle, according to Pro Football Focus.
The addition of Simmons is the Buckeyes second transfer portal commitment in as many days. Former Notre Dame wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. committed to Ohio State on Saturday after his visit. He is a Buckeyes legacy, and his brother plays safety at Ohio State. Styles Jr. expects to play cornerback despite suiting up on offense for the Fighting Irish in his two years in South Bend.
