Good morning, Ohio State fans, happy Memorial Day and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Buckeyes football, recruiting, basketball and more in Scarlet Sunrise.

Recapping everything we learned from Lettermen Row ‘Quarterbacks Week’

The first installment of Lettermen Row’s 2024 position preview series is in the books: “Quarterbacks Week” has come and gone.

Our staff took a look at the Ohio State quarterback room from every angle as the Buckeyes enter a pivotal summer, during which head coach Ryan Day and QBs coach, offensive coordinator and play-caller Chip Kelly will have to identify a starter at the sport’s most premier position.

Here’s a sneak peak of some components of that coverage…

THE BASICS

We outlined the measurables of Ohio State’s five scholarship quarterbacks, in addition to where each of them went to high school, what recruiting ranking they received, who they picked the Buckeyes over and their biggest strength, among other things.

Then we mapped out the career path of each of those signal callers. For Kansas State graduate transfer Will Howard, that section is quite extensive. For others, like true freshmen Julian Sayin and Air Noland, their resume is limited to high school and Buckeyes spring ball accomplishments.

MAKING THE CASE FOR THE STARTING CANDIDATES

Howard is the frontrunner to win the starting quarterback job. He pressed pause on the NFL Draft and transferred to Ohio State instead of USC and Miami, which were seeking his skill set, too. But no spot is guaranteed in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Devin Brown knows that, and the redshirt sophomore has stuck around for another chance at being the Buckeyes’ QB1 after his obstacle-filled 2023 season ended with an injury-riddled, and short-lived, Cotton Bowl start.

Sayin is also “in the mix,” according to Day. The early enrollee is last year’s Elite 11 Finals MVP and the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 2 quarterback in the 2024 class. He transferred to Ohio State from Alabama after legendary Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban retired. Sayin shed his black stripe faster than any other Buckeyes quarterback before him.

We made a case for Howard to win the job, and we made a case for Brown to win the job. Plus, we provided an overview of what Sayin must do to continue to assert himself as a legit part of the QB1 race.

Billy Price announces retirement from football after medical scare

Former Ohio State offensive lineman Billy Price is medically retiring from football after experiencing an unprovoked pulmonary embolism.

“In the blink of an eye, everything can be taken away,” Price wrote on wrote on Instagram Saturday. “On April 24th I had emergency pulmonary embolism surgery to remove a saddle clot that was entering both of my lungs. As a healthy 29 year old, an unprovoked pulmonary embolism with no further medical explanation is terrifying. I am truly thankful to be alive today.

“Unfortunately, I will be retiring from the NFL as the risk of an internal bleed while on blood thinners creates tremendous risk.”

Price, the No. 21 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, spent six seasons in the NFL, the first three of which were with the Cincinnati Bengals. He made 45 starts in the pros.
