Ohio State linebacker Nigel Glover enters transfer portal
COLUMBUS — Ohio State linebacker Nigel Glover entered the transfer portal Tuesday, the final day of the spring transfer window, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
Glover is the fifth Buckeyes player to hit the portal since it re-opened on April 16. He joins safeties Cedrick Hawkins and Ja’Had Carter, along with running back Dallan Hayden and offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi. Hawkins and Hayden have already committed to UCF and Colorado, respectively.
Vimahi also went into the portal Tuesday. The veteran O-Lineman did so after five years with the program. Glover, on the other hand, hadn’t even spent a full year at Ohio State.
The four-star 2023 linebacker from Northmont in Dayton, Ohio, originally signed with Northwestern, where he was the program’s top-rated signee that cycle, but he transferred to Ohio State at the start of last August following the Wildcats’ hazing scandal and the firing of then-Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald.
Because of an NCAA rule that allows players to leave a program after a coaching change, he was immediately eligible to play for the Buckeyes in 2023. Except, Glover didn’t record a single snap last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
“We’ve known about Nigel for a long time,” Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said last summer. “And, really, it’s his attitude — the way that he wants to improve, that he’s he’s so into the X’s and O’s. He’s that kind of kid. He’s the kind of kid that’s coachable and wants to learn.”

But Glover, despite his four-star rating, had a ways to go at Ohio State when he joined the program for training camp last year. For one, he had to learn Knowles’ system. He also had several names ahead of him in a crowded linebacker room where only two players start in the base 4-2-5 defense.
That second part hasn’t changed. Cody Simon is all but a lock to start at MIKE linebacker. Gabe Powers is expected to back up Simon. Meanwhile at the WILL, C.J. Hicks and Sonny Styles are in line to see significant time. Don’t forget about Arvell Reese, Glover’s classmate who appears to be the next man up behind that top group of Ohio State linebackers.
It’s worth noting that after Glover entered the transfer portal last year, he took visits to Michigan, Michigan State, Kentucky and Ohio State. He clocked out as the 10th-rated Ohio prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
