Marvin Harrison Jr. earns Big Ten honors for career day versus Penn State
COLUMBUS — “Super Marv,” “Marvelous Marv” and now “Maserati Marv.”
“I feel like I get new nicknames like every week now,” Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. said after his 11-catch, 162-yard, one-touchdown clinic in a 20-12 win over then-No 7 Penn State. “But it’s great.”
Add another title to the list: Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Harrison is splitting the weekly conference honor with Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-0 rout of Michigan State over the weekend.
Harrison has at least shared Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week two times in the last three weeks. He’s posted three straight 100-yard receiving games for the first time in his prolific Buckeyes career. And that’s after he suffered an ankle injury the game prior at Notre Dame.
Here’s a look at that stretch:
- Week 6 vs. Maryland: eight catches, 163 receiving yards, one touchdown
- Week 7 at Purdue: six catches, 105 receiving yards, one touchdown
- Week 8 vs. Penn State: 11 catches, 162 receiving yards, one touchdown
You wouldn’t know by looking at the box score, but Harrison had what he would classify as a disappointing outing at Purdue, given that he dropped three passes amid his 100-yard showing. Keep in mind, Harrison didn’t drop a pass the first 11 games of last season.
He responded with a career-high 11 receptions against Penn State. Of those 11 grabs, nine resulted in first downs. It was an encore performance against the Nittany Lions, who Harrison also picked apart in 2022 with 10 catches — all leading to first downs — and 185 receiving yards.

Harrison accounted for 44.4% of the Buckeyes’ total yardage on offense Saturday. He capped his remarkable day with an 18-yard, catch-and-run touchdown that gave Ohio State a 20-6 lead with 4:07 remaining.
Harrison is the first player in program history with five career games of 160 or more receiving yards. His three-week streak of eclipsing the century mark puts him two games shy of tying Cris Carter’s school record of five consecutive 100-yard receiving games, which Carter set in 1986.
Heading into a Week 9 matchup at Wisconsin, Harrison is seventh nationally in receiving yards per (109.4). He’s got 42 receptions, 766 receiving yards and six touchdowns so far.
“It’s hard for me to find somebody who’s better in the country,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “So I don’t know how he gets on these lists or doesn’t get on these lists. But, to me, he’s one of the most special players in the country.”
